Hi,
I've been looking to replace my Mambo powered http://www.firstov.com web site for a couple of months. I've tried WebGUI, Droopal, Zope and a bunch of other open source CM systems and finally simple migrated my site to Joomla.

Advantages: clean and simple, but powerful admin interface, lots of free templates that are very easy to modify for a non programmer. Easy install of add-ons. And the main thing - my kids and friends can ease submit their news and articles. Very light application for a web server (esp, compare to Zope).

Disadvantages: Lack of advanced access control list (only available as an add-on).
Default html editor lacks some important features such as image uploads, etc.. (however there are better editors available for Joomla). Custom 404 errors are not available if search engine frienfly URLs feature is on.

Hope it helpful
Stan

I'm developing a couple of community websites and am thinking of choosing either Joomla or Xoops as a developer's tool. Have you worked with Xoops at all?

I agree there are only two options Joomla or Typo3
Joomla is exceptionaly easy to learn and use with plenty of addons for greater functionality. This also applies to typo3 Only problem with typo3 is the steep learning curve that many people find difficult

I don't think Joomla is easy to learn at all. It took me 2 weeks to get a handle on it versus only a few hours for XOOPS.

If you choose Joomla and start adding components, be prepared to spend much of your time in the forums looking for fixes to problems and look forward to registering on the components developer's web site before you can download the component. Joomla has potential though.

I haven't tried Typo 3 extensively but I hear it is a nightmare to use.

I have little experience except with eZpublish and Typo3.

Typo3 is great in the flexibility of the backend interface. And to answer the template question, there is a distribution at www.webempoweredchurch.org webempowered church that has some great TemplaViola templates. Easy to use, and great layout schemes using what i believe is the future of template building technology. WEC offers a whole tar package that is easier than the standard version to install as well.

Just an update: Firstov.com got migrated to Drupal.
The main reason for migration was the problem with Joomla SEO (search engine optimization), as Joomla generates a few different URLs for the same content. In addition Drupal provides very tight and solid integration of all modules with the Drupal's core, which beats Joomla's components/bots/etc model big time. And finally, we already have a couple of sites running on single Drupal framework/code and there is less headache to support all web sites using one Drupal installation.

You're better off going back to Mambo. The Joomla team is becoming fractured and divisive. And the quality is starting to mirror that. They have some really inexperienced core developers and a lead that seems to be clueless. I've gone back to Mambo 4.5.4. It's much more stable and not as headache prone as recent Joomla releases.
