Hello everyone,

I need some help to choose a CMS which will help me build a community portal and informations website.

The features of the website would be :

- Community (membership, blog, forum, news, videos, photo gallery, events, profile of the week/month...)

- Informations (Restaurant, Cinema, Bars, Clubs, Electronic, Shopping, Events, Venue...) for only one city at the beginning and later other cities.

The website will include maps for example to describe an event where, when...

-Auction, we would like later to implement auction through the website, for example a user with a restaurant account can create an auction for a dish for example, then users can bid...

The CMS should be entirely customizable, to fit our template, we will include some spaces for advertisement for example in the frontpage and also in user messages or profiles...

Just a few details about the website, to give you guys an idea.

Which CMS enough powerful will allow me to make it ? I'm a newbie by the way :)

Hi Heilong,

check Drupal or Joomla which are both powerful and should have the extensions and modules you need. You can also create your own modules very easily with CSS or/and PHP. The only thing is you have to get into the structural organisation of them, which are not like you are used to when you are a user of the windows explorer.

I worked with typo3 which was organized more logically for me, but after I tried Joomla and was getting into it, nothing can come over it. So nice.

Greetings ;)

What kind of web hosting are you intending to use? Since you are a "newbie" how much knowledge of databases, languages, server software, etc. do you have? Your level of involvement in these items makes a big difference in what CMS you should choose.

If you think you will need to write some of the capabilities of your portal, then I would recommend DotNetNuke for Windows environment, Joombla for Linux environment or Tandem Server CMS for ease of setup and use (it's Windows environment also).

DotNetNuke and Joombla have lots of user groups and 3rd party modules so they should be able to meet all of your application requirements.

Tandem Server CMS is full featured (see their on-line demo) but easier to setup and start using than the other two.  It also can meet all of your application requirements except the Auction. However, by the time you are ready to add the Auction app Tandem Server may be able to handle it.  But since you are talking about setting up a portal, the Auction App could be done by some other piece of software and you would seemlessly link to it through your Tandem Server menus
